Pose Pictures

To get the model to pose how i wanted him to, you had to explain exactly what was happening and you had to tell him almost to act it out. I had to tell the story of what was happening so that he would be put into the mind frame of the character to make the picture look effective.

Here, i had to tell him that the bin was trying to kill him, or being aggressive towards him. It took a few attempts for me to get the right pose because every time i took a picutre, the facial expressions were wrong because he would look to happy or like he was enjoying it rather than fearing or preventing it.

It was quite hard to get him into position and tell him exactly what i wanted because it was hard to express my ideas and transfer them from my mind to my words.

Weekly Production Monitoring Blog- 29/03/11

This week, I worked independently and at college to get the production started.

Day 1: I sorted out and made all of the objects that needed to go onto my bin, i made the eyes and the arms, stuck them together so that they were ready to be attached to the bin the next day.  

Day 2: I had my photo shoot on the morning. Before i went i had to fix my bin up so that it had the eyes, mouth and arms attached. I then took it upstairs to the photo shoot room where i set up the props and put the model in place so that i could start to take the photos. I played around with the position of the model and the bin until i was happy; i also changed the position of which i was taking the pictures until i got a position which looked effective. After the photo shoot, i uploaded my pictures onto my computer and looked through them making sure i was happy with the shots that i had taken.

Day 3: I started to play around with the photos, finding the ones which were worth keeping and those that weren’t. I then started to load them into Photoshop so that i could start to edit them. I made up half of a front cover but then decided that i didn’t like the layout of it so i decided to start again with a different picture.

Day 4: I edited one of the pictures of the bin so that it had cartoon eyes, mouth and arms. I decided that this would be more effective on the front page rather than having a bin on there that didn’t stand out.

I feel as though everything that i did went to plan this week however there were a few problems which occurred. For example, when i was taking the bin up the stairs for the photo shoot, the arms and the eyes fell off so i had to re attach them when i got back up, taking more time up. I also had problems with Photoshop for example, i  merged my work together and then needed to edit it afterwards, once i had closed the programme therefore i had to start it all again. Again, taking up valuable time.  

This week, as well as using Photoshop and learning some new skills on there, I took some pictures and learnt how the lighting and positions affect the pictures. I learnt how to use the brush tool in Photoshop and i learnt how to use the magic selection tool to create the contrast between block colours. I used these skills whilst creating the mouth.

Targets:

Next week, I hope to get my magazine finished.

Day 1: I want to get the front cover almost finished and out of the way so that i can concentrate on my double page spread.

Day 2: Again, i think i will be working on the front cover so that it is nearly finished.

Day 3: I will start on my double page spread, making sure that i am still working on my front cover.

Day 4: I want to have finished it all and have it handed in.

Next week, i am going to have to use up a lot of my own time so that i can get the project finished. If i don’t use a lot of my own time then there is no way it will get finished because there just isn’t enough lesson hours available.

Contingencies:

The main problem that can occur this week is me not getting my project finished. Hopefully, this problem wont occur because i will have worked so much in my own time. Other little problems may occur also such as Photoshop and InDesign not working or the computers breaking down. If this occurs then i will have to trail around finding other computers that i am able to use.

 This is the first front cover i did. This is the one i wasn't happy with so i decided to re do it and make it a little better with the items on it standing out.

This is where i am up to now on my front cover. As you can see, i have used a different image for the bin and placed the picture of Adam infront of it so that it has more depth. Also you can see that i have edited the picture of the bin to make it look more like a cartoon which makes it stand out more.

Weekly Production Monitoring Blog- 21/03/11

Progress:

This week, I worked independently and at college to get the production started.

Day 1: I finished off the article layout in InDesign and ready so that I could add in the text and the pictures next week.  I also got the pictures that I had taken of my other model uploaded onto the computer so that I could resize them into the poster advertisement size.

Day 2: I placed the edited photos onto the Photoshop document so that they were there, ready for the final production of it. I also made the letters for the separated sub titles in a different font and added effects to them so that they were also ready to place in position on the final product.

Day 3: I have my photo shoot next week so I decided to leave the work on the documents for after this. This is because I wouldn’t be able to place the other objects on the page in the correct places until i have the photos actually on the page and in life size.

Day 4: In the lesson, I helped a friend out with his photos so i was up in the Photo Studio for most of the lesson. When i came back down, I started to search on the internet for Cartoon feature ideas that i could stick on the bin for my Photo shoot.

I feel as though everything that i did went to plan however I feel as though i could have accomplished more if i have had booked my photo shoot earlier. By now, i should have all of the photos loaded onto the computer so that i can start editing etc. But i don’t so the consequence of this is not having as much time for the actual production of the magazine.

This week, i again, only used Photoshop and InDesign. There was no new skills learnt, and the skills that i used, i had touched on before hand in other lessons.

Targets:

Next week, I hope to get my magazine nearly finished.

Day 1: I want to get my bins sorted, so all of the features want to be printed out, and ready to stick onto them for the photo shoot the next day.

Day 2: I hope to get my photos taken by around half 9 so that I can use the rest of the lesson to upload them and start putting them into the documents.

Day 3: On this day, i want to write up my article so that this is in place. I also hope to start editing the front page in Photoshop.

Day 4: I want to carry on with the Photoshop front cover so that i can get this finished.

In my own time, i will come up to the media room and use the library so that I can also get the article started and on a moving progression at the same time.

Contingencies:

The main problem that could occur this week is the model not turning up for the Photo shoot. If this problem occurs then i will have to use someone else and then as a consequence, I may have to change the style of my front cover. Another problem that could occur, as in every other week, is the computers not working, if this happens, then i will have to use my time efficiently and sort other things out that doesn’t need the computers.

This is the progression of the front cover... as you can see, i have put the letters on so that they are apart from each other and have added effects to them. I also have added two pictures in and have edited a bar code.

This is the progression of the article layout. As you can seem there is a font for the quote along the top that i like, there is also the article written into it. I have managed to get ahead of my schedule as placing the text into the article was organised for next week.



Production Monitoring Blog - 8/03/11

Progress:

This week I started to complete my AS Treatment Handbook. I also started to draw up/think of front cover designs and article ideas. This week, I concentrated solely on the post production process making sure that everything was ready for the next week when I was starting my actual unit 3 Production.

Day 1: I started to complete my AS Treatment Handbook, I also completed the Story Style Planning Document, and this was a plan of everything that I wanted to include in my production so I had a plan to run off when it came to the production process.

Day 2: I continued with my AS Treatment Handbook, trying to get this completed.  I also finished drawing the first ideas for the front cover. I changed the title from ‘UNKNOWN’ to ‘SMASHED’ this was because it seemed to have more of an effect and looked like more effort had been put into the magazine.

Day 3: I finally finished the AS Treatment Handbook, with this out of the way I was able to continue with the rest of the pre production process.  By now, I had started to think of some article ideas in detail, using my research to find out things that would be relevant to put in.

Day 4: By now, I had started to put all of my ideas together to form an idea that I wanted to use on my final product. Bearing this in mind, I drew up a final flat plan of my front cover.

I feel as though this week, everything went to plan and there were no major problems that prevented the progress of my production from running smoothly. I would say that the only problem for me was the lack of inspiration and ideas. I had to spend a lot of time doing extra research on what my target audience are in to and how to create the front cover that will appeal to this.

This week, there were no major technical skills that I have learnt because most of my work was done by hand. For example, all of my drawings were done by hand as I thought that I could replicate my ideas better through hand drawing rather than trying to find pictures etc. from the Internet and then editing them in Photoshop. This also, would have been extremely time consuming, leaving little time for the rest of my pre production process.

Targets:

This week, I am going to have to complete the pre production process so that my actual production can start.

Day 1: I am going to double check my page ideas and I am going to complete my mood board so that this can be handed in.

Day 2: I am going to use InDesign to design my double page spread and get the initial layout sorted s that it is ready to then just place all of my information, articles and pictures into it.

Day 3: On this day, I will double check my Unit 3 folder to make sure that I have everything up to date and ready to be handed in. I will also continue with the article lay out.

Day 4: I want to start placing some text into the article layout, downloading fonts etc. I also want to start creating my front page on Photoshop.

I will have to make sure that I am extremely organised so that I can get the first part of my Unit 3 folder handed in and out of the way so that I can concentrate solely on the production process. I will have to make sure that the computers are free when I need them because if I can’t get a computer then I won’t be able to complete the work as I don’t have the computer programmes at home.

I will also have to learn and use a range of technical skills. This includes efficient use of Photoshop and InDesign. I will have to learn how to edit text, the colours, photos etc. And how to place everything I want on the page in a way that looks professional and not overcrowded.

Contingencies:

The problems I may encounter next week are just problems with the computers. They may not be available or there may be technical problems with them that stop me from making progress. If these problems occur, then I will have to make use of my time. I would draw my ideas etc. Instead of starting to put them through on to the computers.

Weekly Production Monitoring Blog- 15/03/11

Progress:

This week I started to work on my Unit 3 work in more detail. I finished the AS Treatment article, mood board, schedule, two article ideas, two flat plans and rationales and 2 front cover design ideas.

Day 1: I finished off my front cover and double page spread ideas. I started to write up my photo shoot plan and my flat plans/rationales.

Day 2: On day 2 I finished off my flat plans and rationales, I made sure that the rationales were written up well enough that when it came to making the final products, I could bounce my ideas back off them to help me produce them.

Day 3: I printed off all of the Unit 3 work so far, I made sure that everything was in the folder and was in order. This was everything from the AS Treatment Handbook all the way through to my Flat plans and rationales.

Day 4: I looked for fonts that represented the feeling that I wanted the magazine to put across. To do this, I used http://www.dafont.com/ and looked through the horror section. I wanted to create a feeling of fear. I then used the quotes that I had put in my story style planning document and I chose the best one to put across the top of the double spread page.

Day 5: Outside of lesson, I decided that I would come to the library and work on my ideas some more. I started to make up my front cover in Photoshop. I played around with the place of the masthead and the places where the pictures etc would go.

I feel as though everything did go to plan this week and I feel as though I can concentrate more on the production process now because the folder has been handed in, this means that I don’t have to worry about getting behind with any work.

This week, I have used Photoshop and InDesign a lot. This means that I have been actively learning. I have learnt how to layout my design effectively. I have also learnt how to smooth out photos etc. so that they look more professional.

Targets:

Next week I have to get right into the production of this final product.

Day 1: I am going to get the front cover sorted, I am going to put in the other photos for the posters etc and get the main parts of it done so that I just have to place my photos onto the page, ready for editing,

Day 2: I am going to take my photos on Wednesday the 23^rd at 9:00, these then will be uploaded onto my system and I can start to sort through them, choosing the ones I need for the cover and the double page spread.

Day 3: I am going to write up my article and place the photo on the page. I am going to edit it first in Photoshop and put a red tint to the page.

Day 4: I will start to place the photos on to my front cover and start to edit the page.

Contingencies:

The problems that could occur this week are, the model not turning up or the computers not working. If the model doesn’t turn up then I will have to use my backup models instead.

This was my first design layout for my double page spread. I decided this looked too crowded and so I decided to change it.

This is my final design idea for the double page spread. I decided this was better because it is a lot less crowded and looks a lot more intimidating for the target audience.

This is the font I decided would be effective for the front cover. I learnt how to make the splashes around the font and so i put this into use and used it on this.

InDesign Blog

Whilst making this double page spread, I have learnt many new skills. Before starting this mini project, I had never heard of the programme InDesign. Whilst using InDesign, I learnt how to use margins, gutters and text boxes to create the right format that I wanted to make it look like a magazine article. It took me a while to learn how to get the margins and the text boxes to the right dimensions without messing the page up but once I had learnt how to do it properly there wasn’t a problem and I could do it over and over without any issues. I learnt how to make drop caps and these are used at the start of the text to give a visually attractive look and it makes the reader be instantly drawn to the first word, I managed to do this pretty easily as it only involved highlighting the first letter and changing the size dimensions. I think this looks quite good on the page but could have maybe of been in a different font so that it stands out more than the one that is there now. I also learnt how to place the text in the text boxes and make it flow on naturally without it looking like there is obvious breaks and then jumps to the next column. This skill took a while to get the grasp of as it was different to other computer programmes that I have used before as you had to place the text in and not just copy and paste, I think that the text on this double page spread could have been set out a little nicer and could have had more time spent on it so that it would look a little more professional and neater instead of being a bit wobbly in places and not having a crisp edge. I learnt how to wrap the text around the images and around the enlarged quotes so that the quotes were the centre of attention and could be placed in the middle without overlapping the text, this again, could be improved upon as I think that in places, the text looks a little scruffy and out of place. I tried to wrap the text around the quotes the best I could but it kept on going in different places so this is another skill that I need to improve.

      Next time I make a double page spread article like this, I will try and spend a little more time on the minor details for example, the wrapping of text around the quotes so that it looks more professional with straight edges. I also will spend more time on things like the font of the drop cap so that it attracts more attention than the plane font that is on there now.

      Having learnt these skills, I feel as though it will be a lot easier when it comes to my unit 3 production as I now don’t have to worry about not knowing the basics of the programme when writing the article and setting it out.  This means that it will be a lot easier and quicker for my unit 3 production to get started.

      I do however, need to progress a lot of the skills further and I need to be able to use a lot of the tools in the programme a lot more confidently. For example, the placing of texts etc. just needs practising but i can adjust and learn all of this as I go through the process of my unit 3 production.

Photography Skills

I decided that if I framed my image in a large open space then it would allow for headlines etc. I then decided that I would cut around Adam so that he was just on a plain white background not being too busy and overcrowded. The tilt is slightly upwards suggesting power. It was easy to control the model because he listened to what was said however it was difficult for me as the person directing to explain exactly what I meant how and how to put it across in an understandable manner. I decided that the eye line needed to be in line with the person looking at the magazine however I didn’t want there to be any eye contact so I made him look away. Luckily, the weather was just right and I didn’t have to change any of the ISO settings, there was sunlight coming from one direction so I was able to use this and make the other side look dark. With this image, there was some minor problems, there could have been more light used on the left side of his face so that the right was even darker than it is. This would just emphasize his features and enhance them even further.

Photoshop skills

I used margin lines on the left hand side of the magazine cover so that the outside edges of the writing looked crisp and in line making it a little bit neater. I used a downloaded font by going on to the internet, on to www.dafont.com and then searching through till I found one that I liked enough. I then downloaded it and installed it, cutting it on to my desktop for easy access. Once I had installed it from my desktop, it then appeared in Photoshop and was ready to use. I used this style of font because I feel as though it represents the whole attitude of the magazine; it looks kind of rebellious and has its own unique style which you wouldn’t find on a magazine such as ‘OK’. I used a different font for the sell lines and the headlines because I felt as though the font that was used for the masthead wouldn’t look right with lots of writing. So then I downloaded another font and used this for all other texts, I used this one because it again, has a rebellious look to it and has attitude which represents the theme of this magazine. From the Photoshop tutorial, I learnt how to get the messy effect on text and how to do it. I learnt how to use the brush tool, the quick select and the duplicate tool. I controlled colour, and chose my colour by looking at a Kerrang magazine. I looked at my image and saw that he was wearing black so I based my theme around this, I figured that red, black, white and yellow was a good colour scheme to go with this, it has a good look to it without looking to over powering or overcrowded and messy. I cropped my image so that it was small enough to be on the cover without taking up all the space available. I needed the space to write around the image. I also took away the background so I used the lasso tool to cut around Adam so that he was on a plain white background instead of in the park. I did this so that you could write on the background and around him with it being seen and not looking too busy. I used the shape tool to create a strap line on the top and on the bottom of the page, in this I had rewards such as ‘free’ items or giveaways and a load of bands that relate to this type of magazine so that you had a brief insight into the magazine. I did this by using the rectangle tool and filling it with black, then changing the text colours to add effect. I imported a barcode from Google by saving the image and then opening it in Photoshop, I then cut round the image and cropped it to a suitable size before placing it on the cover.

Connotation creation

In my sell lines, I just used basic language. I used rewards, for example, ‘massive give away worth £1000’ this instantly would draw the reader in and make them want to buy the magazine so that they would have a chance with winning it. I also used words such as ‘PLUS’ and the symbol + so that, all the time, it looks like you’re getting more than you are actually paying for. I listed a load of bands in the sell lines so that people interested in this sort of music are instantly drawn into looking for their favourite bands. I used sell lines such as ‘album of the month revealed’ and ‘all new interviews’ so that it looks like this is the only place where you are going to find this information which makes it special. I also used ‘for one week only… £1’ this shows that you are getting a really good deal because of the fact that you are getting all of this and more, for just £1.

Targets for Unit 3 Project

In my unit 3 project, I would like to use studio lighting instead of natural lighting so that a different effect is created. I would also like to be able to control my models better, I would like to know exactly what I want so I can tell them, and not just use a spur of the moment decision to try and create a desired effect. I would like to be able to think of more ways to say things and create more effective language to make the whole project more effective. I would also like to develop my camera techniques so that there isn’t too much under/overexposure in the image and finally, I would like to be able to use Photoshop more efficiently so that I don’t take a long time to do one thing. I need to get used to it more and have lots more practise.

Skills Development: Side Lighting

With side lighting, you are going to end up with deep shadows. These shadows may well enhance the mood of some scenes and be quite welcoming and effective, but for most photography, especially that of people, it can have the opposite effect unless you are aiming for a certain mood or look in the image. The face is lit more intensely on one side than the other. Front lighting is often the most pleasing for everyday subjects for example, the light source behind the camera and is the easiest to expose correctly because you don't have to think about shadows etc. However, problems can occur such as bright sunlight making the person squint which wouldn't give the desired effect.

Side lighting can suggest passion and seductivness, it is well suited for young women that have smooth skin and regular facial features. However, it is also effective for men whose rugged character lines should be emphasized. Focusing on just one side of the face can accentuate the jaw line on a man making him look more masculine and shows of the prominence of it.

Front lighting can ehance and soften females features because it makes the face look more pure. When taking a picture from the front, it captures every single feature on a specific spot, in this case the face. It shows all the purities etc. and when the picture is taken, the flash would relect and highlight the main features on the face. These include, the cheekbones, the nose, the brow bone and the chin. When the photo is taken, it enhances these features which makes the person in the photo look a lot softer and more enhanced.

When i took the photos, i found it hard to get just enough lighting because it was either too dark, then you'd move and it would become too light, or it was the other way. Especially on the side lighting photos. To change this, i decreased the shutter speed and then it seemed to take a better photo. To make it even better, i could take the photos at a different time of day or in a different light altogether. Maybe this is something i should take into account later on. At first, the images were blurry so we had to change the focus. I also think that the framing could be a little better in that they shouldn'y be just cut off where they are, before the shoulders. This should be payed more attention to in future also. I think the targets in the future is to take my time when taking the photos, take great care with the lighting that they are being taken in and also review the photos as soon as they are taken to make sure that they are focused and framed right.

Skills Development 5th November

Skills i have learnt:
In the practical, i learnt what shutter speeds are and how to use them. A shutter speed controls the length of time that light can pass through the lens, take a picture and then reach the memory card. It is measured in Seconds or fractions of seconds. For example, 1/1000 is a fast shutter speed and then 1/30 is a slow shutter speed.
Using a Slow shutter speed is good for low lighting and is good at capturing movement.
Using a Fast shutter speed is good for capturing a freeze frame movement. For example, a photo finish... what use would a blurry photo be? so the fast shutter speed is used to get a crisp shot of the movement.

How effectively did i use the skills?
I feel as though i used the shutter speeds quite effectively because the end pictures were quite good. I found that for the slow shutter speed in the low light, the 193 setting wasnt as effective as the 186. The 186 was the setting used for the final pictures. And then for the pictures we took outside, i used the 169 setting because this was more effective and took better pictures than the 200 setting that we originaly had it on. I was impressed with how quickly i managed to understand how to change the settings and how to make it look more effective however i think that the end pictures maybe could have been a little better, especially the ones that were taken outdoors. The indoor pictures of the light were quite effective and i was pleased with the final picture however, the pictures taken outdoor didn't give the total desired effect, it didn't show a crisp and a sharp finish on the picture as i would have liked.

How will these skills beneift me when it comes to my Unit 3 Production?
These skills will benefit me when it comes to my Unit 3 Production because i now know how to use the shutter speed effectively so i can easily get the desired effect on my product. I can now change the settings on the camera so that, when i know what i want the pictures to look like, i am one step closer to being able to reach that desired end product.

What skills do i need to develop further?
I need to develop my abilty to take photos that are in movement. For example, it was easy enough when i just stood to take the pictures of the light, but when it came to the actual moving pictures, it proved quite difficult to take the shot when i actually needed to, i kept on getting it either too late or too early which effected the photos.

In this picture, you can see that the arms are blurred so the shutter speed was wrong. The camera didn't catch the right movement in order to capture a crisp and smooth end image.

In this picture, there isn't as much blur as in the picture before however, there isn't any definition on the body, most of the focus is on the background and therefore, here again, the shutter speed was wrong so there wasn't a crisp and smooth end picture.

Here, there is no blur and the focus is on the person. This was captured as she was falling, i managed to catch her as she hit the ground. This picture is crisp and smooth and gives the desired effect.

Even though this picture is in focus, it would have been better to have captured more of the movement. Because i have recognized this, i will make more of an effort next time to capture the movement and make it look more like an action shot.

INDEPENDENT LEARNING

What was the tutorial about and what have i learnt?

The tutorial was about Photoshop and using the tools to change the lightness and the darkness of pictures. I leant that you can change the brightness of a picture by using the brush tool and then changing which way you want to use it. To brighten the picture up, you set the foreground colour to white and darker, to black. You then scroll over what you want to change to what and then you have an adapted picture.

How would this benefit me during my practical work?
This would benefit me during my practical work because i will be able to change what my pictures look like to create a more effective look on the final product.

Introduction Project

Evaluation

In my initial print skills audit, I only had one box ticked as yes which was the self timer facility. All of the other boxes I had ticked as no because I had never used these facilities before. However, now that my advert is completed I can now say that I have improved on my skills a lot. I now can use Photoshop to an extent, before this, I hadn’t even opened the programme.  On Photoshop, I have used layers, text control, shape creation, load selection features, magnetic lasso and the cropping tool. These are all skills in which I have improved upon and can now confidently use on this programme.

At first, when using these skills, I didn’t use them very effectively. It was a bit of a mess and was very confusing at first if I am honest but, the more I used them, the better I got and I became more comfortable whilst using the facilities.

The work I am going to blog shows my skills progression as I am actually handing in a piece of work produced on Photoshop  which is a major improvement on what I would have been able to hand in at the start of the course. It shows that to get the effect I have, I have used facilities such as layers, magnetic lasso etc.

There are a few weaknesses in my work such as the cutting out of certain objects isn’t totally perfect but at this point, it was as close as I could get it and some of the photos weren’t taken in the places I would have like them to be so I had to improvise.

If I was to do this project again I would be a lot more organised  and make sure that I got everything prepared before starting for example, we couldn’t find an empty classroom, and when we finally did, we had to write on the board, by this point, it was too late and the lesson had ended. So to be more prepared I would organise everything in advance.

To move towards the standard achieved in professional working practise, I would spend a lot more time on it, and I would, again, be a lot more organised. I would be a lot more precise in the placing of my items, the backgrounds in shoots and the actual cutting out with the lasso to make it look extremely precise.

Before we re- branded the product, the sardines would have been aimed at maybe an older age than teenagers, maybe about 30+, and really, could have any type of social grade, in any type of life cycle and of any sex. It just depends on whether you like them or not. The new audience is teenage boys who are in school/college and are still living at home.

I think that the boy holding the sardines in front of a white board with girls looking as though they are chasing him is a good way of engaging the audience’s attention. This is because it shows that eating the sardines is attracting girls’ attention, makes you brainy and basically ‘knows your stuff’.

The points of my project that don’t work are the white bard equations, they need to be bolder to make them really stand out and attract the attention. Also the text, the fonts, colours etc could maybe be a little bolder to attract more attention and to really attract the typical teenage boys attention they need to be a little more brighter.

I think my project in most ways is tailored to meet the demands of the target audience as it just shows a brainy, powerful boy that has girl’s attention, which is what most teenage boys want.  Things that don’t work s the colour scheme, this needed to be a little brighter to make it really stand out and grab the boy’s attention, it maybe didn’t need to be block colours, it could have done with a bit of contrasting.

You can see I know about segmentation systems because I have tailored the project to teenage boys. Typical teenage boys want to be clever in school but without being the school ‘nerd’ the want to have girls attentions and to have them chasing after them. This advert portrays that. I have segmented the audience and you can tell this as I don’t think the advert would attract elderly people. They may like sardines and buy them anyway, but I don’t think they would look at this advert and instantly go and buy them because it wouldn’t appeal to that age range.

In conclusion, I think that my project was quite successful for a first attempt, there were a few things that I would change if I had the chance to do it again and would be more organized.
